The wait is over. Southwest just announced that they will be flying to Hawaii starting 2018.
There are several values for this. One huge one is the Southwest companion pass where you pay for your flight and you can bring your companion with you for just paying the tax. My family of 4 people were able to fly to many different destinations this year for the price of 2 plus tax. Another value is that Southwest lets you cancel your flight without any cancellation fee up to the day of the flight. The final one is you get 2 free checked bags on any flight. I don’t know about you but not having to worry about paying $25 for each checked bag and flying 2 people to Hawaii for the price of 1 is pretty great.
For those that no too familiar with the Southwest companion pass, you get Southwest companion pass if you earn 110,000 Rapid Reward points in you account within the year. So if you were able to earn 110,000 points within year 2017 in your account by Oct 17, you will get the companion pass for the rest of 2017 and the whole 2018. So most people try to accomplished this at the beginning of the year so they could get the whole year plus the following year. One would ask how can you get that many miles? Well, one way is flying with southwest a lot. Or another way is through Chase Southwest credit card’s bonuses.
Chase offers 4 different Southwest credit cards: 2 personal and 2 business cards. They have many different credits card sign up bonus offers throughout the year (ranging from 30,000 to 60,000 miles). Keep in mind before you jump right in and start applying for the credit card. Chase has the 5/24 rule where they will not approve you if you opened more than 5 credit card within the 24 months period.
Personal: Southwest Plus and Southwest Premier
Business: Southwest Business Plus and Southwest Business Premier
The highest offer i saw was the Chase personal Southwest credit card offered 60,000 points. So if you apply for both versions of the card, you could end up with 120,000 points where you will earn your companion pass almost immediately after you meet the spending requirement.
Now that you see how i value Southwest companion pass? Would you jump on this and start getting yours?
